Not sure how to spend your day? Here are three tried and tested approaches — a classic family day, a budget day out, and a rainy day plan. Each is designed to make the most of what Rhyl genuinely does well.
The Classic Family Day
9:00am — Arrive and park on the seafront. Walk along the promenade to the Rhyl Miniature Railway at the Marine Lake. Take the 15-minute circuit — children are enchanted without exception. 10:30am — Walk the promenade east as far as the Pavilion Theatre, taking in the Sky Tower and seafront. 11:30am — Ice cream from Sidoli's. 12:30pm — Lunch at the Kite Surf Café for something decent, or chips from Barratt's on the seafront. 2:00pm — Afternoon on the beach (check the tide — low tide is best). Buckets, spades, paddling, running. 4:30pm — Rhyl Children's Village on the West Parade (free, lets the kids burn the last of their energy). 5:30pm — Fish and chips for dinner on the promenade, then head home. Cost: Miniature railway + lunch + chips + ice cream = approximately £25–35 for a family of four. A reminder that Rhyl's best things are mostly free.
The Budget Day
Morning — Beach at low tide. Bring a picnic or buy basics from the Aldi at Marina Quay. Pack a windbreak, a ball, and a bucket and spade. Midday — Walk the Marine Lake circuit (free, 20 minutes). Picnic by the lake. Afternoon — Foryd Harbour for birdwatching and estuary watching (free). Walk the western beach towards Kinmel Bay (free). Late afternoon — Sunset from the promenade, Sky Tower illuminations coming on as it gets dark. Evening — Chips from Barratt's. Cost: Chips for two + parking = approximately £15–20 total. A proper good day for almost nothing.
The Rainy Day Plan
Morning — SC2 Waterpark. Book in advance. Allow 2–3 hours; this is the centrepiece of the day. Lunchtime — 1891 Restaurant at the Pavilion Theatre for a sit-down lunch (best option for a comfortable, dry meal). Afternoon — The arcades on East Parade (dry, bright, and cheerfully unreconstructed). If there's something on at the Pavilion Theatre, check ahead and book — it's the best all-weather option in town for an evening. Otherwise, fish and chips to take away and eat in the car while watching the rain on the sea. There are worse ways to spend an evening. Cost: SC2 + lunch + chips = approximately £45–55 for a family of four. Note: the SeaQuarium, previously a key wet-day option, closed permanently in 2023. SC2 is now the main indoor attraction.
Extended Stay Tips
For a weekend in Rhyl: add the day trip to Rhuddlan Castle (30 minutes south, genuinely excellent), a walk from Prestatyn along the first section of Offa's Dyke Path, and an evening at the Pavilion Theatre if there's something on. St Asaph is worth 90 minutes for its cathedral and the pleasure of Britain's smallest city. You will not run out of things to do for three or four days in and around Rhyl.
