Rhyl is a genuinely good destination for visitors with dogs. Ffrith Beach at the western end of the resort allows dogs year-round; there are dog-friendly cafes; the Marine Lake circuit and the Foryd estuary are excellent dog walks; and the town generally has the relaxed attitude to dogs that you'd expect from a working-class seaside resort rather than a polished holiday destination.
The Beach
Ffrith Beach (the western section, beyond the SC2 waterpark) allows dogs at all times of year, making it the go-to for dog owners visiting out of season. There is space, the sand is good, and dogs can run freely. The stretch of beach beyond the Foryd Harbour, continuing west towards Kinmel Bay, is also excellent and much quieter than the central promenade area.
On the main central beach — the stretch most associated with the promenade and East Parade — dog restrictions apply from 1 May to 30 September (approximately). Outside this period the whole beach is accessible with dogs.
Dog-Friendly Cafes
Kite Surf Café on the western promenade is the best dog-friendly cafe in Rhyl — it is explicitly welcoming to dogs, has outdoor seating overlooking the beach, and serves decent coffee and food. It is popular with both the kite surfing community and dog walkers for exactly these reasons. Several other seafront and promenade cafes are accepting of well-behaved dogs, particularly those with outdoor seating; it is always worth asking.
Good Dog Walks
The Marine Lake circuit is an excellent dog walk: flat, interesting, about a mile, and away from the busiest promenade traffic. The Foryd Harbour area is wonderful for dogs — wildlife to observe from a distance, interesting smells, and the river and estuary to explore. The riverside path towards Rhuddlan is a good extended walk for energetic dogs. Ffrith Beach at low tide provides one of the most satisfying dog walks on the North Wales coast — vast flat sand, no crowds, plenty of space to run.
Practical Notes
Always bring poo bags — the council takes dog fouling seriously and enforcement does occur on the promenade and in play areas. Dogs must be kept under control near the bird-rich areas around the Foryd estuary. Fresh water for dogs is available from several points on the promenade in summer; bring your own outside peak season.
